Low notes
Learn bass clef without getting lost
Bass clef is used for lower sounds: left-hand piano, bass and cello. The idea is the same as treble clef: find a reference point, then read lines and spaces.
The key reference point
The two dots of the bass clef surround the F line. That is your starting point.
Find F
The line between the two dots is F.
Move up or down
Each step changes note, just like in treble clef.
Practice slowly
Low notes mainly require new visual landmarks.
What to remember
The bass clef is built around F. The two dots to the right of the clef surround the line that carries F. That is the main landmark for reading lower notes.
- The bass clef lines from bottom to top are G, B, D, F, A.
- The bass clef spaces from bottom to top are A, C, E, G.
- On piano, bass clef is often used for the left hand, while treble clef is often used for the right hand.
Keep improving
Learn the logic first, then build the reflex.
