Musical rhythm
Learn rhythm: pulse, note values and timing
Rhythm is the engine of music. Before reading fast, beginners need to feel the pulse, recognize note values and respond at the right time.
The three basics
Rhythm becomes easier when you focus on three ideas.
Pulse
The steady beat you can tap with your foot.
Note values
Quarter notes, half notes and eighth notes each take a different amount of time.
Timing
A rhythm game helps you answer exactly when needed.
Understanding note values
The pulse is the steady beat. Note values tell you how long a note lasts compared with that pulse.

- Rhythm is the organization of sounds and silences in time.
- Tempo tells you how fast the pulse moves.
- Regular timing matters more than speed at the beginning.
