Harmonica Guide
Chromatic harmonica tabs: holes, blow, draw and slide
A chromatic harmonica tab shows the physical action on the instrument. The staff tells you the sound; the tab tells you the hole, breath direction and sometimes the slide button.
How to read tabs
A number usually shows the hole, while a sign or word shows whether to blow, draw or press the slide. Different methods may write it differently, but the musical logic stays the same.
- The number is the hole of the harmonica, from left to right.
- Blow produces one note in the chosen hole.
- Draw produces another note in the same hole.
- The slide raises the note by one semitone on a C chromatic harmonica.
4 blow = C4 draw = B4 blow + slide = C#4 draw + slide = C

Common beginner mistakes
- Confusing the hole number with the note name.
- Forgetting that blow and draw give different notes.
- Pressing the slide too hard instead of keeping the movement relaxed.
- Reading only the tab and ignoring the staff, which slows down music-reading progress.
